Event of the week/month –  World Humanitarian Day 2024

2023 was the deadliest year on record for humanitarian workers. 2024 could be even worse. These facts lay bare a glaring truth: the world is failing humanitarian workers and, by extension, the people they serve.

Despite universally accepted international laws to regulate the conduct of armed conflict and limit its impact, violations of these laws continue unabated, unchallenged and unchecked. And while civilians, including aid workers, pay the ultimate price, the perpetrators continue to evade justice.

World Humanitarian Day is commemorated every year on 19 August to pay tribute to humanitarian workers killed and injured in the course of their work, and to honor all aid and health workers who continue to provide life-saving support and protection to people most in need. The Day highlights the importance, effectiveness, and positive impact of humanitarian work.

Overwhelming majority of parents believe in-person play has a positive impact on their child’s wellbeing

Our Childline service hears first-hand about the challenges that some children face during this time. Some tell Childline they struggle to cope being out of their school routine, while others feel disconnected from their friends.

Childline’s trained counsellors promote play, both online or offline, as a helpful tool that children can use to support their wellbeing and reduce anxiety.

The results of this survey are in line with a report conducted by the Children’s Commissioner on the importance of play. The 2018 findings state that children who play are happier and more confident. It also reveals that they are better at dealing with stress and forming healthy attachments.

Reducing child poverty in England would significantly boost child health and narrow health inequalities

Renewed efforts to reduce child poverty in England between now and 2033, such as removing the 2-child limit on child benefit, would significantly boost several aspects of child health and narrow health inequalities across the country, finds research published online in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health.

Tackling it would substantially cut the number of infant deaths and children in care, as well as rates of childhood nutritional anaemia and emergency admissions, with the most deprived regions, especially in the North East, set to benefit the most, the projections indicate.

This follows our ongoing review of social media platforms (SMPs) and video sharing platforms (VSPs) as part of our Children’s Code Strategy. Our Tech Lab reviewed 34 SMPs and VSPs focusing on the process young people go through to sign-up for accounts.

A deep dive into deepfakes that demean, defraud and disinform

Deepfakes are videos, pictures or audio clips made with artificial intelligence to look real. New Ofcom research, published today, has found that 43% of people aged 16+ say they have seen at least one deepfake online in the last six months – rising to 50% among children aged 8-15.[1]

Among adults who say they have seen deepfake content, one in seven (14%) say they have seen a sexual deepfake.[2] Most of the available evidence indicates that the overwhelming majority of this content features women, many of whom suffer from anxiety, PTSD and suicidal ideation because of their experiences.

Abuse linked to Belief or Faith – What you can do

Most local authorities and police forces now have in place bespoke guidance covering abuse linked to belief or faith. Most are strikingly similar, for this is a specialised and unique area of safeguarding, steeped in deep cultural belief, with some very distinctive indicators. Because it is unique in many aspects , there is only so much you can include in guidance. However, what we generally see in many  policies, is a tendency to run out of steam when it comes to advising professionals what they should do, if they identify a child at risk. They tend to fall back on advice like “follow your local safeguarding procedures” or signpost the reader to their organisations protocols covering child abuse per se.

Teens with problematic smartphone use are twice as likely to have anxiety – and many are eager to cut down

Two new studies of smartphone habits in teenagers have identified links between problematic smartphone use (PSU) and depression, anxiety and insomnia. The research revealed that one in eight young people want help to reduce their smartphone use.

PSU describes a pattern of behaviours, thoughts and feelings linked to smartphones that resembles an addiction, such as feeling panicky or upset when the phone is unavailable, finding it difficult to control the amount of time spent on the phone, using for longer without feeling satisfied, and using the phone to the detriment of other enjoyable or meaningful activities.

Overview of gender inequality around the world

The international community as a whole has committed to achieving gender equality by 2030. However, the many global crises underway are a stark reminder of the urgent need for coordinated action to promote equality worldwide : women and girls are disproportionately affected by armed conflicts, pandemics, climate change and economic crises.

In 2024, no country has achieved gender equality. One in three countries have made no progress since 2015, and the situation of women has even deteriorated in 18 countries, such as Venezuela, Afghanistan and South Africa. At the current rate of progress, it will take another 131 years to achieve gender equality worldwide.
