Understanding and applying the Mental Capacity Act in safeguarding practice

The Mental Capacity Act (2005) is a crucial piece of legislation that protects individuals over the age of 16 years who may lack the capacity to make certain decisions for themselves. Whether you're working in healthcare, social services, or any profession that involves supporting vulnerable individuals, understanding this Act is essential.

In this blog, we will explore the key principles of the Mental Capacity Act (2005), which ensure that individuals who may struggle with decision-making are supported with respect and dignity. We will explain how to assess mental capacity in practical terms, outlining the process for determining whether someone has the ability to make a particular decision at a specific time.

Tech giants need to protect girls online

New research from the NSPCC reveals that major social media platforms are failing to protect girls from grooming, harassment and abuse.

By creating fake teenage girl profiles on ten popular platforms, researchers found that detailed profiles make it easy for adult strangers to target girls with unsolicited messages. Features designed to boost engagement, like encouraging larger networks or prolonged activity, often compromise safety.

A YouGov poll of 3,593 UK adults revealed 86% believe tech companies aren’t doing enough, with 52% of parents worried about their daughters’ online experiences. Key risks include contact from strangers (41%), grooming (40%), bullying (37%), and sexual harassment (36%). Only 9% of girls feel safe online.

Smartphone Free Childhood: Protecting Kids from Early Screen Exposure

Smartphone Free Childhood is a parent-led movement dedicated to protecting children from the potential harms of early smartphone use.

Recognising that excessive screen time and early exposure to smartphones can negatively impact children’s development, social skills, and mental health, this movement encourages families to delay giving kids smartphones for as long as possible. Advocates promote alternative activities that foster real-world play, creativity, and face-to-face interaction. They also emphasise the importance of setting boundaries around technology use to support healthy growth and well-being.

Temperature in the workplace

There's no law for maximum working temperature, or when it's too hot to work, because every workplace is different.

No meaningful upper limit can be imposed because in many indoor workplaces high temperatures are not seasonal but created by work activity, for example in bakeries or foundries.

However, employers must stick to health and safety at work law, including:

  • keeping the temperature at a comfortable level

  • providing clean and fresh air

Everything you need to know about social media algorithms

Social media algorithms work like highly selective librarians. Their job isn’t to broaden your knowledge but to keep you engaged and browsing for as long as possible. These algorithms analyse your behaviour, what you like, comment on, and share, to curate content tailored to your interests.

While this can make your feed feel personalised and relevant, it also means you’re often shown content that reinforces your existing views and keeps you hooked.

What is Digital Voyeurism?

Digital voyeurism is the practice of watching or recording someone's private moments without their knowledge, usually through electronic devices or online platforms. It can include secretly capturing photos or videos, sharing personal content without permission, or obsessively following the intimate details of someone’s life on social media.

A former pharmacist was accused of hacking company computers and cameras to secretly spying on hundreds of co-workers private activities. Legal experts warn that cases like this highlight the growing dangers of digital voyeurism in the workplace — a violation that not only breaches trust but can leave lasting emotional and psychological scars on victims.

Sustainability

When the Ocean Speaks, We Must Listen

The ocean called and told me to pass along an important message…

She said, “My health depends on the leadership of your generation – rising above complacency and pushing for tangible ocean protection. Commitments towards improved blue finance, ocean science, Indigenous co-governance and Marine Protected Area expansion are not enough as they stand. I do not have time to wait for those currently in power to make bold decisions for our collective wellbeing on island earth. Implementation is everything and time is running short. We need to mobilize trillions for a regenerative blue economy. Can I count on you?”
