Global Lessons Being Learnt from the US “Take It Down” Act on Intimate Image Abuse

The recently passed “Take It Down” Act in the United States is being closely watched by UK policymakers and safeguarding professionals as a potential model for addressing non-consensual intimate image (NCII) abuse. The Act mandates swift removal of intimate content shared without consent, provides survivor support, and holds platforms accountable for failing to act.

In the UK, NCII cases are on the rise, with many victims reporting long-term emotional and reputational harm. The Act’s survivor-led approach - which includes trauma-informed support services and streamlined reporting mechanisms - offers valuable insights for strengthening the UK’s Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) strategy. Cross-border collaboration and digital literacy education are also key components in tackling this growing issue

Safeguarding in the Seasonal Shift

Autumn brings a shift in rhythm across further education provisions, and with it, a fresh set of safeguarding considerations. As students settle into the autumn term, staff should be alert to signs of emerging needs, especially among new learners adjusting to new and unfamiliar environments.

Seasonal changes can impact mental health, with shorter daylight hours and colder weather contributing to feelings of low mood, isolation or loneliness. It’s also a time when students may begin to disengage, so monitoring attendance and attainment is key. Additionally, autumn often sees an increase in social events, including Halloween and Bonfire Night, which can bring risks related to substance misuse, peer pressure, and online exposure.

The UK’s Revenge Porn Helpline has been shortlisted for ‘Helpline of the Year’, a recognition that underscores its critical role in supporting victims of image-based abuse. Since its launch, the helpline has assisted thousands of individuals in removing intimate content from the internet, offering confidential advice, emotional support, and practical guidance on navigating legal options.

Health & Safety

Self-harm Content Declared a Priority Offence Under Strengthened Online Safety Laws

In a significant update to the Online Safety Act, the UK government has classified serious self-harm content as a “priority offence.” This means platforms must now take proactive steps to detect and remove such content before it reaches users, rather than relying on user reports or reactive moderation. The change reflects growing concern over the impact of online content on mental health, particularly among young people and vulnerable adults.

This amendment empowers Ofcom to hold platforms accountable for failing to prevent the spread of material that could incite or glorify self-harm. It also signals a shift toward a more preventative approach to online safety, with an emphasis on early intervention and technological safeguards.

Daylight Savings Time: Why the clocks changing can affect our health

The days are getting colder and shorter, which means autumn has arrived in the UK. Soon, the clocks will jump back by an hour to mark the end of Daylight Savings Time or British Summer Time. Although this will give us an extra hour in bed, the clocks changing could have an impact on our health.

Wider Curriculum

Demystifying Deepfakes

Deepfakes are synthetically generated content that convincingly mimic real people and pose growing safeguarding risks for students in further education. Through AI and generative technology, content can be generated to impersonate individuals, fabricate inappropriate content or spread misinformation.

According to SWGfL, deepfakes have already been used in UK educational settings to create fake videos and messages targeting both students and staff, with serious emotional impact and leading to disciplinary consequences. The rise of generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot has made synthetic media more accessible, increasing the likelihood of misuse among digitally savvy learners.

Age Checks Roll Out Across UK Platforms

Snapchat continues to enhance user safety with its Home Safe feature, now rolling out globally to all users. Over the past month, more users have begun using the feature to effortlessly let friends know when they’ve arrived home safely. By setting a home location on Snap Map and activating the Home Safe alert in a chat, users can send a one-time notification to selected friends or family, providing peace of mind without the need for constant messaging. Early feedback shows that this feature is particularly appreciated by families, flatmates, and close friends who want an easy way to stay connected and ensure each other’s safety.

Government told to prepare for 2C warming by 2050

The UK should be prepared to cope with weather extremes as a result of at least 2C of global warming by 2050, independent climate advisers have said.

The country was "not yet adapted" to worsening weather extremes already occurring at current levels of warming, "let alone" what was expected to come, the Climate Change Committee (CCC) wrote in a letter addressed to the government.

The committee said they would advise that the UK prepare for climate change beyond the long-term temperature goal set out in the Paris Agreement.
