Legislation/Regulation of the week

Health and Safety at Work Act 1974

Before 1974 approximately 8 million employees had no legal safety protection at work. The Health and Safety Act 1974 provides the legal framework to promote, stimulate and encourage high standards of health and safety in places of work. It protects employees and the public from work activities. Everyone has a duty to comply with the Act, including employers, employees, trainees, self-employed, manufactures and suppliers.

Self-neglect

Self-neglect is an extreme lack of self-care, it is sometimes associated with hoarding and may be a result of other issues such as addictions. A hoarding disorder is where someone acquires an excessive number of items and stores them in a chaotic manner, usually resulting in unmanageable amounts of clutter. The items can be of little or no monetary value.

Practitioners in the community, from housing officers to social workers, police and health professionals can find working with people who self-neglect extremely challenging.

The important thing is to try to engage with people, to offer all the support we are able to without causing distress, and to understand the limitations to our interventions if the person does not wish to engage.

Prevent duty training: Learn how to support people susceptible to radicalisation

Prevent sits alongside long-established safeguarding duties on professionals to protect people from a range of other harms such as substance abuse, involvement in gangs and physical and sexual exploitation. 

Prevent is one part of the government's overall counter-terrorism strategy, CONTEST. The aim of Prevent is to:

·        tackle the ideological causes of terrorism 

·        intervene early to support people susceptible to radicalisation 

·        enable people who have already engaged in terrorism to disengage and rehabilitate

Lewis Capaldi Opened Up About Anti-Psychotics: I’m Ready To Say They Changed My Life, Too

With his soulful ballads and chronically online sense of humour, I’ve always felt an affinity with Lewis Capaldi. Little did I know that I had a lot more in common with the musician than I realised.

He recently made a triumphant return to Glastonbury, two years after his meltdown on that very stage, and needless to say, we’re all happy to see him back. But how did he get to this point? Capaldi opened up about his mental health struggles during an interview on This Past Weekend with Theo Von, where he revealed that, as part of his mental health treatment, he was prescribed antipsychotics.

When should you worry about pain?

We all experience aches and pains every now and then. Sore muscles after a heavy workout, a headache brought on by stress, or perhaps an old injury flares up every now and again. But what if that pain doesn't go away or suddenly becomes worse? There comes a time when pain isn't just a general ache and needs to be checked out.

Alcohol poisoning

When someone drinks too much alcohol and drink it quicker than their body can process it and filter it out of their blood, they can suffer from alcohol poisoning. Drinking too much alcohol depresses the nervous system from working properly, particularly the brain. It can severely weaken mental and physical functions, and the person may become unresponsive.

How To Manage Grief At Work When You’ve Experienced A Loss

Burnout is still a crucial topic, with more than 8 out of 10 employees at risk, according to Mercer's 2024 Global Talent Trends report. LIFE impacts burnout – that's what I say in my keynote on the topic. The L in LIFE stands for loss. Stress increases when you've experienced a loss, and the chance for burnout rises if combined with organizational contributors like a lack of autonomy or community. Unexpected loss can be incredibly traumatic, and even with fatal conditions, it's still hard. The death of a loved one has been recognized as the most significant life stressor that we face as humans.

16 year olds to be given right to vote through election reforms

The voting age will be lowered to 16 across the UK by the next general election in a major change of the democratic system, despite some concerns within Labour that it could benefit smaller parties like the Greens and Reform UK.

The government said it would be fairer for 16- and 17-year-olds, many of whom already work and are able to serve in the military. Keir Starmer said it was important that teenagers who paid taxes had their say on how the money was spent.

Gender pay gaps narrow in 2024-25

The average UK gender pay gap has seen the second largest decrease since the introduction of pay gap reporting in 2017.

Employers in financial services and property have typically seen the largest reductions in their gender pay gaps, with real estate narrowing by 14.9 percentage points and banking by 8.6pp, although these organisations have often had some of the widest pay gaps to begin with.

Unlike gender pay gap data from the Office for National Statistics, which looks at the amounts paid to women and men across the whole economy, the analysis by PwC uses data from the information provided by employers to the government’s gender pay gap service

Extreme weather is the UK's new normal, says Met Office

The UK is breaking heat and rainfall records increasingly frequently as its climate continues to warm, the Met Office has warned.

The country's changing weather patterns mean the UK now experiences a "notably different" climate to what it was just a few decades ago, its State of the UK Climate report says.

We now have many more very hot days and many fewer extremely cold nights, according to this latest assessment.
