Legislation/Regulation of the week

The Mental Health Capacity Act 2005

The Mental Capacity Act 2005 came into force in 2007. It is designed to protect and restore power to those vulnerable people who may lack capacity to make certain decisions, due to the way their mind is affected by illness or disability, or the effects of drugs or alcohol. It covers decisions about day-to-day things like what to wear or what to buy for the weekly shop, or serious life-changing decisions like whether to move into a care home or have major surgery.

Safeguarding & ED & I

Safeguarding in the Age of AI

The DfE’s latest guidance on AI in education reinforces a critical message: safeguarding remains everyone’s responsibility, even in the digital age.

AI in education must prioritise student safety and data protection. Tools used should align with Keeping Children Safe in Education, requiring strict age limits and information around consent. Staff and students need awareness of AI-generated content risks — from deepfakes to misleading answers — and clear rules around image use and consent.

FE provisions should update policies, train staff, and assess tools for safety, GDPR compliance, and consider real benefit. AI can assist with data analysis but must not make decisions about students without human oversight. When it comes to mental health tools, only those regulated for safety should be considered.

Supporting Smooth Transitions from Early Years to School

The Early Years Alliance has launched a new child-centred resource, the ‘Moving on up’ toolkit, designed to support early years providers in helping children make a smooth and confident transition to school.

This practical toolkit can be shared with families and used by practitioners to reflect on and strengthen their transition practices. It highlights the important role that families, early years providers, schools, and the wider community all play in supporting children at this key stage.

Important Update: Chickenpox now a Notifiable Disease in England

Did you know that certain illnesses must be reported to local authorities to help track, manage, and prevent wider outbreaks? These are called notifiable diseases - and they’re an important part of keeping our communities safe.

From this month, chickenpox (varicella) has officially been added to the list of notifiable diseases in England. This means that when a case is identified, healthcare professionals are now required to notify their local Health Protection Team.

This update allows for quicker responses and improved monitoring - especially important in environments like early years settings and schools, where chickenpox can spread quickly among children.

What to do When a Parent is Still Unhappy After a Safeguarding Allegation

Even when safeguarding concerns are managed in line with policy, statutory guidance, and local procedures, parents and carers may sometimes feel dissatisfied with the outcome.

In these situations, it’s important to respond with empathy, transparency, and professionalism. A calm, open conversation with the nursery manager or Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) can help address concerns, explain the steps taken, and provide reassurance. Avoid defensiveness and ensure that all decisions and actions are clearly documented and communicated.

How to stay cool indoors this summer

The UK is not exactly renowned for its blazing hot summers, so most of us welcome with open arms a rise in mercury levels. Others find warmer weather uncomfortable and, for some people, the heat can even pose a health hazard.

Air conditioning is a luxury most of us don’t have, so it’s important to find ways to keep yourself and your home cool during summer – especially if you are more vulnerable to the ill-effects of the heat.

Understanding the Manosphere?

Online spaces – which are now the primary place young men spend their time – have been largely ignored by research on masculinities, until recently.

It’s challenging to overstate the magnitude of how user-generated content is impacting young people’s media consumption habits. In 2023, more time was spent online watching one YouTuber known as Mr. Beast – whose content features elaborate challenges and giveaways – than any of Netflix’s top shows. The entertainment industry has been flipped on its head, with the power resting in individuals to influence narratives more than large studios or traditional media.

The Rise in Para-Social AI

Many people find themselves turning to AI not just for productivity or information, but for conversation, support, even a kind of digital camaraderie. As AI becomes more intuitive and context-aware, it’s no longer just about automation or convenience, for some it maybe seeking a sense of connection.

We should be raising important questions about emotional attachment, authenticity, and how we define “relationships” in a tech-driven world.

Recharge Over the Summer

Who said teaching children was an easy job? According to research, being a teacher in the UK means you have the 3rd most stressful job being a teacher in the UK means you have the 3rd most stressful job and 80% of experienced teachers experience work-related stress. Stress is inevitable for teachers, but summer is a good opportunity to switch off and recharge.

What is a heatwave? Understand the impact of extreme heat and who it may affect

The word “heatwave” is often used to describe a period of hot and sunny weather however, this isn’t always correct. A heatwave is a meteorological definition and is officially declared when certain thresholds are met.

The Met Office defines a heatwave as “an extended period of hot weather relative to the expected conditions of the area at that time of year, which may be accompanied by high humidity.”

In the UK, a heatwave is declared when the daily temperature of a certain location meets or exceeds the heatwave temperature threshold for at least three days.

How unusual is this UK heat and is climate change to blame?

A second spell of temperatures well over 30C before we've even got to the end of June - how unusual is this and how much is climate change to blame?

Temperatures of 34C are possible on Monday or Tuesday in south-east England.

They've been triggered by an area of high pressure getting "stuck" over Europe, known as a heat dome.

But climate scientists are clear that the heat will have inevitably been boosted by our warming climate.

Some people might feel these temperatures are "just like summer" – and it's true they are a lot cooler than the record 40C and more the UK hit in July 2022.

Why ZARA and H&M Can't Be Sustainable?

Zara and H&M have dominated the fashion industry with their trendy, affordable clothing. But at what cost? This documentary video exposes the shocking truth behind two of fast fashion's biggest players - Zara and H&M - and their devastating impact on our planet. Every year, 92 million tonnes of textiles are dumped in landfills or burned. This staggering amount of waste is largely driven by the fast fashion industry's relentless push for new styles and cheap, disposable clothing. While both brands tout their sustainability initiatives and "eco-friendly" collections, the reality is far less stylish. Only less than 1% of all clothing is actually "recycled" to become new garments.
