Mental Capacity Act

The Mental Capacity Act is a piece of legislation designed to support individuals who may lack the capacity around their decision making. It applies to big life-changing decisions, as well as day-to-day actions.

Considering a person’s ability around ‘executive functioning’ is key to understand how to support a person around their decision-making ability.

Executive functioning is often seen as “the ability to think, act, and solve problems, including the functions of the brain which help us learn new information, remember and retrieve the information we’ve learned in the past, and use this information to solve problems of everyday life”.

In effect, a person being able to put into action what they have communicated as their decision.

Inside Our Minds, Inside Our Dyslexic Minds

It’s thought that as many as one in ten people in the UK are dyslexic, making it the most diagnosed type of neurodivergence. But despite this, Chris feels that dyslexia is frequently ignored and often misunderstood. He meets two dyslexic people frustrated that the people in their lives don’t fully understand them.

Teaming up with top filmmakers, animators and graphic designers, they create evocative short films which explain to family and friends how they’re truly feeling inside - and what’s really going on inside their dyslexic minds. A school counsellor explains to her brothers how being dyslexic impacts her life, and a builder from south Wales becomes the star of his very own musical.

Why language matters: how we talk about sibling sexual behaviour and abuse

Children’s sexual development and behaviour can be a sensitive subject, and professionals often lack confidence when talking about it.1 In cases of sexual behaviour between siblings, the subject becomes particularly complex and nuanced, and it can be hard for professionals to find the right words.

A lack of clarity and confidence among professionals often leads to imprecise language, which can result in responses that are disproportionate to the behaviour being displayed. When talking about sibling sexual behaviour, it’s crucial that the words we use accurately describe the sibling dynamic, while staying sensitive to the needs of the children and families involved.

Police told to urgently improve child safeguarding

Gloucestershire Constabulary needs to do more to protect children at risk, a watchdog has said.

His Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire and Rescue Services (HMICFRS) found the force needed to "urgently improve" its response to children at risk of harm, and how it investigates reports of abuse, neglect and exploitation.

Inspectors said they regularly found delays in starting investigations, with inquiries often not pursued - leading to poor outcomes for children.

The force said it was "taking decisive action to bring about rapid change" in how it safeguards children at risk.

'Kids form romantic attachments to AI bots' warns child safeguarding group

A digital safeguarding firm has revealed that British children are increasingly bypassing age verification checks to form both sexual and emotional relationships with AI chatbots.

Friend or foe? AI companion bots have been provoking heavy ethical questions over their interactions with underage users. Most recently, Meta came under fire for the rollout of Facebook and Instagram chatbots allowing children to engage in sexually explicit with conversations, a Wall Street Journal investigation as found. How to support the wellbeing of remote workers

Remote working can bring many benefits to people's lives. Remote staff skip the time-consuming and stress-inducing daily commute, save costs by working from home and have the advantage of added flexibility to their schedules. But remote working can also have its downsides. By losing the office environment, those who work remotely may experience feelings of isolation and struggle to maintain a work-life balance – which can in turn, have a serious effect on wellbeing.

No matter where they’re based, it’s an employer’s responsibility to ensure the wellbeing of their employees.

Why Kindness at Work Pays Off

When anxiety is high and morale is low, kindness isn’t a luxury — it’s a necessity. With mass layoffs, economic uncertainty, and geopolitical tensions, kindness is needed now more than ever, especially at work.

Research suggests that kindness yields positive outcomes for businesses. If you’re an emerging leader, being kind to your employees can help you retain top talent, establish a thriving culture, increase employee engagement, and enhance productivity. When people receive a compliment or words of recognition, it helps them feel more fulfilled, boosts their self-esteem, improves their self-evaluations, and triggers positive emotions. The result: happier, more engaged employees.

The What, When, and How of Net-Zero Emissions

Net zero means no longer adding to the total amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

This main way to do this is to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the first place. But not all emissions can be eliminated completely, so those that remain need to actively removed.

Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane. CO2 is released when oil, gas and coal are burned in homes, factories and to power transport. Methane is produced through farming and landfill, as well as other sources.

These gases increase global temperatures by trapping extra energy in the Earth's atmosphere.
