Legislation/Regulation of the week

 The Data Protection Act 2018

The Data Protection Act 2018 is a UK law that sets out how personal data must be collected, handled and stored to protect people’s privacy. It also gives individuals the right to know what personal data is held about them and to have that data erased in certain circumstances.

For organisations, the Data Protection Act (2018) plays a major role in how different-sized companies can use and handle people’s data across the country. Now, the public can rest assured that their data is protected in our advanced digital era thanks to the Act’s framework.

Too little, too late: A multi-agency response to identifying and tackling neglect

Neglect is the form of abuse most often listed as the initial category of abuse on child protection plans in England.1 This report explores the scale of the problem and examines the barriers and challenges that professionals face when identifying and tackling neglect.

The report draws on three strands of qualitative and quantitative research:

  • a YouGov poll in which 700 multi-agency safeguarding professionals were asked about their confidence in identifying and responding to neglect

  • a series of online focus groups with 15 multi-agency professionals, including social workers, teachers, police and healthcare professionals

  • insights gathered from the NSPCC Helpline between April 2023 and March 2024 regarding contacts relating to neglect.

Safeguarding and child protection for tutors

Tutors can become an important part of a child or young person’s life. Over a period of time tutors can build up a strong, trusting relationship with children and their families and play a key role in providing support.

Tutors can have varied roles. They may:

  • work with groups of children

  • work on a one-to-one basis

  • regularly visit children at home

  • work in their own home with children.

Like anyone who works with children, tutors have a responsibility to promote children’s wellbeing. It’s important they are able to recognise and respond appropriately to any concerns, and help keep children safe.

The voice of the child: learning from case reviews

Listening to and capturing the voice of the child is essential for effective safeguarding practice. It helps professionals to understand children’s lived experiences, hear their views about their lives and circumstances, and take effective action to support or safeguard them.

However, case reviews highlight that professionals often face challenges around hearing and acting upon what children are telling them. Key issues include: children not being seen frequently enough or asked about their views and feelings, barriers to seeing children not being adequately challenged, and difficulties in correctly understanding and reflecting upon the child’s voice.

Report, Remove Child Sexual Images: Video

Police data shows that, in 2022/23, police logged more than 33,000 offences where child abuse images were collected and distributed. They found there was a 25% increase in offences between 2021/22 and 2022/23. And a 79% increase on figures from five years ago.

When a young person loses control of a nude image of themselves, it can be very distressing. It's important that young people don't feel judged when this happens and you should reassure them that they haven’t done anything wrong. You should also follow your organisation’s child protection procedures

Navigating puberty

Puberty can be a challenging time. For children and young people who have a learning disability, puberty may come with increased challenges, such as understanding the changes in their bodies, managing their emotions, and expressing their feelings.

Understanding privacy and the difference between public and private behaviours can also be difficult and, at times, confusing.

We know this can also be a tricky time for parents and carers who want to support their children and young people through this new stage of growing up.

Can cold weather make you ill? And other winter myths

It may be a memory of our mum telling us we'll catch our death if we go outside without a coat. Perhaps a well-meaning relative has advised slurping down some chicken soup when we've got a winter virus. Whatever the advice, we've all heard a few winter health myths - but is there truth in any of them? And what age-old advice might keep us healthier this winter?

We all associate the winter with having more colds - and for good reason. But is it the cold weather that triggers these uncomfortable winter viruses?

Should you go to work when you have a cold?

It's a situation every employee has grappled with at some point: do you stay at home or go into work when you're feeling under the weather? Tempting though it might be to bury yourself under the duvet and settle in for a long session of daytime TV, it may not be feasible to take time off whenever you're feeling suboptimal.

How to boost your energy levels and feel less tired in winter

The cold and darker months can take their toll on the way we feel. Often, the shorter days, dismal weather and changes to the way we eat and sleep mean we feel groggy and tired in winter - making it difficult to get out of bed. But why can our energy levels drop over winter, and what can we do about it?

There are several reasons we may feel more tired in winter. Firstly, as the days become shorter, our sleep and waking cycles can become disrupted and we might experience hormonal changes as a result.

The Rise of Online Shopping Scams

As Christmas approaches, many families turn to online shopping for convenience, especially when shopping for gifts for children. While the ease of ordering toys, clothes, and gadgets with just a few clicks is a huge advantage, it also presents a unique set of risks—particularly for families.

During November and December, four out of 10 Brits experience an increase in scam approaches. UK Finance reported that last year, criminals stole a record £85.9 million through 156,516 purchase scams.

One hundred pensioners have gathered for a Christmas party aimed at bringing together people at risk of loneliness and isolation. The lunch, at Adderbury near Banbury in Oxfordshire, is sponsored by a number of local businesses and has been running for four years.
