Food and fuel poverty - what does it look like?

A recent YouGov poll highlights that many parents continue to struggle with the rising cost of living, with more parents facing difficulties now compared to two years ago. Key findings include:

·        25% of parents struggled to provide enough food for their children in the past year, up from 20% in October 2022, affecting an estimated 3.4 million children.

·        33% of parents reduced spending on energy bills, a 2% increase since February 2023.

·        8% of parents relied on local food banks, also a 2% rise since February 2023, affecting over 1 million children.

These figures underscore the growing financial challenges families face.

As an organisation think about the ways you can support your families by signposting them to services in the local area like food banks.

Voice of the child

Listening to the voice of the child enables us to understand children's needs and assess risks or protective factors in their lives, informing decisions and plans to support or safeguard them.

The "voice of the child" involves engaging children in sharing their views, opinions, and experiences, using both verbal and nonverbal communication. It means actively including them in decision-making, not just asking for their input.

Effective practice includes building trusting relationships, developing skills to hear and act on children's voices, providing accessible information, and ensuring that children’s voices are not overshadowed by adults'.

Overcoming under-reporting

In Great Britain, 60,645 injuries and 135 fatalities were reported to the GB Health and Safety Executive (HSE), with an estimated cost of £20.7bn, during the period 2022-23 (HSE, 2023). Many believe these figures represent only a fraction of the true extent and cost of health and safety to the UK economy, with under-reporting contributing to this discrepancy.

Under-reporting can occur at two levels: the organisational, where organisations fail to comply with RIDDOR (Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations); and the individual, where employees fail to report incidents to their employer. Here, we examine the phenomenon of individual-level under-reporting in the workplace.

Winter wellness tips: how to cope with SAD

When the days begin to shorten, many people find themselves spending less time outside. These darker days can cause some to feel depressed and have less energy. If you’re someone affected by seasonal affective disorder (SAD) then you understand how difficult this time of year can be.

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a common type of depressive disorder that doctors and psychologists treat with various forms of therapy and medicine. It occurs when you develop symptoms of depression, such as sadness, low energy, irritability, and fatigue during particular months of the year.

SAD typically begins and ends about the same time each year. For most people, that means symptoms show up in mid to late autumn and last until springtime. But there is a group of people who also experience SAD in the summer months. While not as common as wintertime SAD, those who deal with it in the summer experience similar symptoms.

Australia approves social media ban on under-16s

Australia will ban children under 16 from using social media, after its parliament approved the world's strictest laws. The ban, which will not take effect for at least 12 months, could see tech companies fined up to A$50m ($32.5m; £25.7m) if they don't comply.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says the legislation is needed to protect young people from the "harms" of social media, something many parent groups have echoed. But critics say questions over how the ban will work - and its impact on privacy and social connection - have been left unanswered.

Sustainability

How climate change is rewriting the rules of extreme storms

The behaviour of the world's most powerful storms is evolving. To adapt to more destructive hurricanes, typhoons and tropical cyclones, we need to know how they're changing.

Fuelled by heat from ocean waters, hurricanes, typhoons and tropical cyclones are sometimes known as nature's steam engines. As they barrel over the oceans, they turn its heat into brutal kinetic energy that flattens islands and inundates coastal cities, taking months of urgent repair work to heal. Ocean temperatures are now breaking all records, and these "engines" are responding accordingly, cutting different paths across the ocean, slowing down, and becoming less predictable and more dangerous.
