Videos of the week

The World’s War

As we approach Remembrance Day, it is important to reflect on what the day means. Historian and film-maker David Olusoga challenged and expanded people’s understanding of World War One with this important two-part documentary made for the BBC in 2014. Olusoga’s films tell the story of the war from the perspective of those whose voices are so often omitted, but who made this a truly global conflict.

Drawing on personal stories and testimonies from the hundreds and thousands of African, Indian and Asian troops who fought alongside and as part of the allied forces, and featuring expert historians, economists and modern military commanders, The World’s War brings complex and vital discussions of empire and race into the story, which is illustrated with rarely seen stills, archive and location photography.

What is Fabricated or Induced Illness?

Fabricated or induced illness (FII) is a rare form of child abuse. It happens when a parent or carer exaggerates or deliberately causes symptoms of illness in the child.

The parent or carer tries to convince doctors/teachers that the child is ill, or that their condition is worse than it really is.

The parent or carer does not necessarily intend to deceive, but their behaviour is likely to harm the child. For example the child may have unnecessary treatment or tests, be made to believe they're ill, or have their education disrupted.

1 in 20 children between the ages of 11-17 in the UK have experienced some form of sexual abuse. Child sexual abuse (CSA) is when a child is forced or persuaded to take part in sexual activities. This may involve physical contact or non-contact activities and can happen online or offline.

Children and young people may not always understand that they are being sexually abused. Children and young people of any age, including very young children and babies, can experience sexual abuse.

The impact of financial pressures on young people

Financial pressures are caused by any situation where there is difficulty or uncertainty in meeting financial commitments due to a shortage of money. This could be difficulty keeping up with living expenses or being able to save for the future.

In some cases, financial pressures can lead to poverty and destitution.  Without sufficient protective factors, living with financial pressures can impact a young person’s development and wellbeing, and put them at increased risk of abuse or exploitation.

Health & Safety

Reflections on World mental health day: Well-being in the workplace

The theme of this year’s World Mental health day was supporting staff well-being in the workplace.

In these fast-paced times, more employees are experiencing chronic stress that can lead to compassion fatigue and staff burnout.

Burnout doesn’t happen overnight. It is often gradual and can go unnoticed for sometime before it takes over. It doesn’t just affect individual staff well-being; it has a massive impact of organisations as well.

·        Trust your instincts – If something feels off, it probably is.

·        Report any suspicious behaviour immediately.

Stay informed, stay safe.

How to cope with ADHD: practical tips for everyday living

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurological condition that affects those who have it in different ways. If you have ADHD it may cause symptoms like restlessness, impulsive behaviour, and difficulty concentrating. It's important to address ADHD early to help you manage your symptoms, improve your wellbeing and strengthen your relationships.

According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), around 5% of children and 4% of adults in the UK have ADHD. However, this figure is likely underestimated due to the number of people waiting to be diagnosed.

LGA calls for council tax and health costs exemptions for care leavers

Care leavers should not have to pay council tax or health costs such as for prescriptions, dental treatment and eye tests, according to the Local Government Association (LGA).

The council representative body says the move would help prevent those leaving care from falling into financial hardship and support their transition to independent living.

Exemptions from council tax and healthcare costs should be for those leaving care up to the age of 25, it adds.

The LGA says the move is needed as care leavers are “more financially vulnerable than their peers”, with more than four in five care-experienced young people struggling to afford essentials, according to National Leaving Care Benchmarking Forum figures cited by the local government organisation.

Ofsted to ditch one-word ratings for FE in September

Ofsted FE chief hinted at consultation in the new year for tailored inspection frameworks. Overall effectiveness grades will be ditched from FE and skills inspections in September, one year after the “low information, high stakes” Ofsted judgments were axed for schools.

A senior inspector told the Association of Employment and Learning Providers autumn conference this week the watchdog needed the extra time because “FE is a little more complicated”.

Sustainability

Achieving Zero Hunger to Drive Progress on The Global Goals

Between 2000 and 2020, child mortality rates halved due to factors like increased development aid, strong political leadership, more healthcare workers, vaccines, and new medicines. However, this progress has since stalled. But, addressing malnutrition could halve child deaths again.

Malnutrition affects over 400 million children worldwide, limiting growth and increasing the risk of disease, sometimes reducing the effectiveness of vaccines and treatments. Italso impacts education and poverty, with severely malnourished children completing five fewer years of schooling and earning about 10% less in their lifetime. They’re also 33% less likely to escape poverty.

On top of all of this, climate change worsens malnutrition, hitting the most vulnerable the hardest.
