Legislation/Regulation of the week
The Sarah Act 2015
There is evidence to suggest that people are deterred from volunteering, helping others or intervening in an emergency due to the fear of risk and/or liability.
The Social Action, Responsibility and Heroism Act 2015 (Sarah Act) addresses these concerns and providing reassurance that if something goes wrong when people are acting for the benefit of society or intervening to help someone in an emergency, the courts will take into account the context of their actions in the event they are sued.

Event of the week/month
Male Cancer Awareness Week 2024
Our annual Male Cancer Awareness Week takes place every September. It’s an important event in our calendar that gives us the opportunity to highlight essential health awareness messages for men at risk of testicular, prostate or penile cancer.
With low awareness of penile, testicular and prostate cancer – and the number of men diagnosed rising each year – our annual campaign is more important than ever.
Each year we highlight health messages about these three specific diseases. This helps men, their families and healthcare professionals to learn about male cancer and improve their understanding of the signs and symptoms. By promoting our services and resources, we hope men and their families will gain a better understanding of where to go for help and treatment.
Male Cancer Awareness Week 2024 will take place from 16-22 September 2024.

Independent Review of Prevent: One year on progress report (accessible)
The first duty of government is to keep British citizens safe and our country secure. Reducing the threat to the UK from terrorism is a crucial part of that duty, and I take it extremely seriously.
Prevent is one of the four pillars of CONTEST, the Government’s counter-terrorism strategy which was refreshed in July 2023. Prevent is vital in stopping people from becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism in the first place. Early intervention prevents individuals from committing acts of terrorism and reduces the chances of radicalisers spreading their insidious, extremist ideologies.
The importance of Prevent has been brought into sharp focus by the Israel/Hamas conflict. In the 68 days following Hamas’s 7 October 2023 terrorist attack against Israel, the UK saw a 534% increase in antisemitic incidents.

The Good Childhood Report 2024
Our Good Childhood Report 2024 shows the latest trends in children's wellbeing. Our research seeks to understand how young people feel about different aspects of their lives. This year’s Good Childhood Report reveals that too many young people are unhappy with their lives. 11% of the children and young people who completed our survey in 2024 had low wellbeing. And shockingly, data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA 2022) shows that the UK’s 15-year-olds had the lowest average life satisfaction in Europe.
The Good Childhood Report 2024 looked at children’s responses to the latest Understanding Society survey wave to assess how wellbeing has changed over time, for all children, and by gender.
In 2021/22, the latest data available, children’s (aged 10 to 15) mean scores for happiness with their life as a whole, their friends, appearance, school, and schoolwork were all significantly lower than when the Understanding Society survey began in 2009/10. Family was the only aspect of life where there was no significant difference in children’s average happiness compared to 2009/10.
In 2021/22, on average, children were most happy with their family, and least happy with their appearance. In terms of proportions, almost one in six children (15.6%) were unhappy with their appearance (that is, they scored below the midpoint of the scale for this measure).

Trends and Usage Report- Online Safety
Cybersafe Kids has published a report looking at children’s online experiences and habits in Ireland. The research included surveys of over 7,000 8- to 14-year-olds in 101 schools. Key findings show: 38% of 12- to 14-year-olds have experienced cyberbullying; 25% of 8- to 12-year-olds have been bothered or upset by something seen or experienced online; and 38% of 12- to 14-year-olds kept negative experiences to themselves when bullied. The report calls for age verification to be a mandatory requirement for access to online services.

When should you worry about swollen legs?
Swollen ankles? Your doctor has a tricky-to-spell word that means the same thing. Oedema is the medical word for any swelling caused by excess fluid under the skin. There are many reasons for oedema that shouldn't cause concern - although oedema should always be checked out by a doctor to make sure there's no underlying problem. One of the most common causes of oedema in older people who spend long periods sitting is common-or-garden gravity.
Blood is pumped around your body at high pressure in your arteries. The pressure in your veins, which bring it back to the heart, is much lower. If you sit still for long periods with your legs down, you don't move your calf muscles, which act as pumps to take blood back to your heart against gravity. This can lead to fluid accumulating.

7 top tips for a safe night out
Just about all of us love a night out with family, friends and colleagues. It's great to get together and enjoy ourselves in style, and it’s an opportunity to have some fun at the pub or club, with drinks likely to be in full flow.
But whilst having a good night out will be at the forefront of your mind, make sure you stay safe. Sadly, when people don’t take their safety seriously they can end up a victim of crime, such as being attacked or mugged.

How to protect your device from phone thieves
Before we leave the house, most of us will perform the following ritual: checking we have our wallet, keys and mobile phone. Our smartphones have become an essential part of our daily lives, whether we’re staying connected with our network or keeping on top of our personal banking and household bills.
But our devices also contain a whole range of personal data that criminals want. And with phone thefts becoming a more common occurrence (they soared by 20% last year to record levels), phone-snatching fraudsters are getting increasingly sophisticated and have even been known to take out loans or empty their victim’s bank accounts using our stolen handsets.
New research has revealed more than half of Brits (54%) are worried it’ll happen to them. But there are ways to help keep your device and its data safe, like switching off your message previews to keep confidential information hidden from prying eyes and keeping your device secure when you’re not using it.

Why does Quality matter?
The experiences that a child has in early child care can have important effects on his or her later social, emotional, and academic success. Research tells us that a baby's brain is not completely developed at birth. The brain develops based on a child's specific experiences. And the foundations of brain development happen in the first few years of a child's life. Children in high-quality child care are more likely to have positive experiences that help their brains develop to the fullest.

Apprentices' rights and responsibilities
Apprentices have the same rights as other employees. You are entitled to a contract of employment, and a minimum of 20 days paid leave each year, plus bank holidays. You will work at least 30 hours per week with your employer, and undertake part-time study through a mixture of day/block release, distance, and e-learning.
Your employer and university, college, or training provider will set out details of what they will provide and what they expect from you as an apprentice, both as an employee and as a student, in two key documents.

POV: People will take sustainability seriously when companies make it more relatable
Sustainability has a relevance problem.
That might be hard to believe, given how obviously and painfully relevant it is to our lives and shared future. But do a little digging, and you’ll find it true.
In our latest sustainability research, Our Human Moment, we polled thousands of people across the globe and unearthed a particularly startling statistic: Approximately three in every five people do not strongly resonate with the idea of living sustainably. Similarly, recent polling conducted across seven European countries by YouGov found that although there is support for government policies to fight the climate crisis, that support diminishes the more those policies infringe on our day-to-day lifestyles.
Simply put, while sustainability has risen to the top of business agendas and for the most part stayed there through the recent disruption cycles, it just hasn’t materialized into enough of a public priority to scale change in a timely way.

The Importance of Environmental Sustainability
It's estimated that plastic releases more emissions per year than aviation and shipping, which is mostly down to its reliance on oil, contributing to climate change. And given humans throw away 353 million tonnes of plastic per year, this figure is likely to increase in the coming years.
Not only are we eating through fossil fuels at a rapid rate, but we are also destroying the air, land, and water quality through the emissions associated with this industry.
If we want to move away from this destruction, we need to intertwine environmental sustainability into our everyday lives. So let's look at why environmental sustainability is crucial, how we can achieve it, the benefits of it, and the environmental challenges the planet currently faces.
