Play Safety Week 2024
Play Safety Week is an initiative focused on raising awareness about the importance of safety in play environments. The campaign addresses various aspects of play safety, including the design and maintenance of playground equipment, the use of appropriate safety gear, and the importance of adult supervision. The goal is to create play spaces where children can explore, learn, and have fun while minimizing the risk of injury. During Play Safety Week, communities come together to assess and improve the safety of local play areas and to educate others about how to keep children safe during play.

Insights on responses to children experiencing online harm and abuse
The internet is a place where children can play, learn and connect with others. However, it can also put them at risk of abuse and harm. When a child experiences abuse or harm online it can be challenging to know the best way to respond.
This briefing uses insights from Childline counselling sessions and NSPCC Helpline contacts to share the types of responses children receive after they have told someone about their experiences of online harm or abuse.

Building a better Ofsted: the response to the Big Listen
Ofsted has published a detailed response to its ‘Big Listen’ consultation, setting out how the inspectorate will reset its relationship with the sectors it inspects and regulates, while continuing to raise standards for children and learners.
The Big Listen is the largest consultation in Ofsted’s history. It showed broad support for Ofsted’s role – particularly from parents; but it also highlighted significant disquiet about the inspectorate from those working within education and social care. Responding to the criticism, Ofsted has announced a raft of changes and improvements to the way it works. His Majesty’s Chief Inspector, Sir Martyn Oliver, described the Big Listen as “the beginning of a new chapter” for the organisation.

Missing Children Response Assessment Tool: Resource
When a child goes missing, it is an indication that the child may be at risk of harm. Children’s services working with other agencies must act to understand that risk and to keep the child safe, whether the reasons for going missing are conflict or abuse at home or grooming by people outside the family.
Local authorities, police and health bodies also need to think strategically about how to safeguard all children in their area from being targeted for abuse and exploitation. Going missing could be one of the indicators that a child is being groomed. Children may become the target for abusers when they are missing and rely on strangers to provide them with food and shelter. Effective partnership working is one of the key factors in ensuring that missing children receive the response they need.

New Kinship report highlights needs of kinship children are overlooked and ignored
Kinship’s new report Forgotten: Support for kinship children’s education and mental health highlights that children being raised by relatives or family friends in kinship care are often suffering from life-changing trauma with no support.
According to our research, children being raised by relatives or family friends because their parents are unable to care for them are being denied access to the support they need to heal from early childhood trauma.
We are urging the new Government to urgently improve support for the kinship children in every school playground who have been through trauma, such as abuse, neglect, separation and loss, but whose needs are being overlooked and ignored.

NHS referrals for anxiety in children more than double pre-Covid levels
More than 500 children a day in England are being referred to NHS mental health services for anxiety, more than double the rate of before the pandemic began, the Guardian can reveal.
In 2023-24 there were 204,526 new referrals of patients aged 17 or under where the primary cause was anxiety, official figures show. In 2019-20, the year before Covid-19 struck, the total was 98,953. In 2016-17 it was 3,879.
The alarming increase means children are now being referred to NHS mental health services in England for anxiety at a rate of one every three minutes or almost 4,000 a week.

Early years practitioner wellbeing support
The early years workforce makes a huge contribution to young children’s lives, and a role in early years can be enjoyable and rewarding. However, it can also be a challenging and demanding career. As in any workplace, this can take a toll on an individual’s mental health and wellbeing.
It is therefore essential that early years practitioners are properly supported within their setting to feel happy and fulfilled both inside and outside of work.
Improving practitioner wellbeing practice can benefit both the individual practitioner, and the setting as a whole. This creates a positive environment for practitioners and children, which in turn can:
reduce absence
increase effectiveness at work
improve practitioner retention

The Power of Accountability: Why Taking Responsibility is Key to Personal and Professional Success
Accountability is the cornerstone of personal and professional success. It is the ability to take responsibility for our actions, decisions, and behaviors, and to accept the consequences that come with them. The power of accountability lies in its ability to help us achieve our goals, build better relationships, and become more successful in our personal and professional lives.
At its core, accountability is about ownership. It is about taking ownership of our actions, decisions, and behaviors, and recognizing that we have the power to make a difference in our lives and the lives of others. When we hold ourselves accountable, we become more committed to our goals, and we are more likely to follow through on our commitments.

Because of teamwork.
When people communicate and collaborate well in their respective teams, and when all the workers in a company act like one big team, it’s easy to make progress towards business goals.

Sustainability
A day in the life of a humanitarian worker
World Humanitarian Day was created after a bomb attack on The Canal Hotel killed 22 humanitarian aid workers in Baghdad, Iraq, on 19 August 2003. Advocates use the day to champion the survival and wellbeing of people affected by crises, and call for the safety and security of aid workers. This year, we talked to Mary Angelica Carillo, a Senior Protection Officer working with the International Rescue Committee on the Colombia-Venezuela border. She shines a light on the complex humanitarian crisis that is ongoing, and what she does to support those most affected.

Gender equality stalling or going backwards for 1bn women and girls
More than 850 million women and girls are living in countries rated as “very poor” for gender equality, says a new report, subjecting them to a litany of potential restrictions and abuses, including forced pregnancies, childhood marriage and bans from secondary education.
The SDG Gender Index, published today by Equal Measures 2030, a coalition of NGOs, found that no country has, so far, achieved the promise of gender equality envisioned by the UN’s 2030 sustainable development goals (SDGs).Between 2019 and 2022, nearly 40% of countries – home to more than 1 billion women and girls – stagnated or declined on gender equality.
