Welcome to Issue 113 of Quest news. We have 12 hours of off-the-job training for our apprentices to read and learn.


Quest Training has been re-accredited for the MATRIX Standard, following our assessment at the end of October 2023.  We wish to thank all apprentices, staff and stakeholders who took part in the interviews, and helped us to maintain our accreditation.  We received really good feedback report, and are working on the recommendations they have suggested to improve our service offer.  Thank you once again, from the senior team at Quest.

Christmas Day Act 2004

The Christmas Day (Trading) Act 2004 (c 26) is an Act of the Parliament of the United Kingdom. It prevents shops over a certain size from opening on Christmas Day in England and Wales. Shops smaller than the limit are not affected.

Child protection plan and register statistics  

If a child is considered to be suffering, or likely to suffer, significant harm the local authority will make them the subject of a child protection plan (in England) or add them to a child protection register (in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales). 106% increase in child cruelty and neglect offences in England in the past 5 years  

New data shows recorded offences of adults neglecting, mistreating or assaulting children have doubled over the last 5 years.

Dementia- Walking, Wandering and Missing  

In the last 5 years we have without doubt seen a significant increase in missing episodes involving people living with dementia. Dementia is a term used to describe the symptoms that occur when the brain is affected by specific diseases and conditions. It describes a loss of mental ability severe enough to interfere with normal activities of daily living.

Health and Safety in Early Years Education

Work-related stress absence still above pre-pandemic levels – HSE

Nearly two million workers in Great Britain reported suffering from work-related ill health during 2022-23, with work-related stress absence still above pre-pandemic levels. According to the annual figures published by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), a total of 1.8 million workers reported they were suffering from work-related ill health during the 12-month period.

Cost of Living crisis is negatively affecting majority of employees

The cost-of-living crisis is negatively affecting most UK employees, a study has found. Research commissioned by Unum revealed that this year’s figure of 86% was a 9% increase from 2022, when 77% of workers reported the same. The employee benefits provider’s survey of more than 3,000 part-time and full-time staff highlighted that 46% of people worry about finances every day, while 45% are trying to cut costs by limiting their heating and 37% believe their financial worries are making them feel physically drained.

Wider Curriculum

More people are receiving long term care following years of decline 

The number of people using council-arranged long-term adult social care in England grew in 2022-23 following years of decline, official data has shown. Overall, 835,335 people received long-term care during the year, up 2.1% on 2021-22, when 817,995 people were given a service, showed the figures from NHS England.

Record 100,000-plus social workers renew registration

 A record 100,495 social workers in England have renewed their registration with the regulator this year. Social Work England said 97.3% of practitioners who needed to renew completed the process during the three-month window, which closed on 30 November. This is the highest proportion recorded in the four renewal rounds since it took over the regulation of social workers in England in December 2019.

Winter Mini Challenge

The Winter Mini Challenge encourages children to keep up their reading habits over the winter break. Join the six characters as they have fun on a winter walk to the library and spark a love of reading even in the most reluctant of readers. Taking part in the Winter Mini Challenge is simple. Children read at least three books of their choice between 1 December 2023 and 19 February 2024 and add them to their online profile at the Winter Mini Challenge website.
