What is an apprenticsehip?
Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes which combine on-the-job training with nationally recognised qualifications. This gives apprentices the unique opportunity to earn while they learn, and gain practical work experience relevant to their desired career path.
It also means employers are able to play a key role in the development of their staff, and build a workforce that is directly tailored to their business mission and values.
Traditionally, apprenticeships were exclusive to the trade-based or construction industries. Today, programmes are offered in a huge variety of sectors including administration, business, healthcare, childcare and many more.
Who is eligible?
To be eligible to become an apprentice, applicants must:
Be aged 16 or over.
Currently live in the UK and have been a resident of the EU for the past 3 years.
Be in employment for a minimum of 16 hours per week in a role relevant to the programme they wish to undertake.
Please note: since 1st May 2017, candidates with a university degree are now eligible to complete an apprenticeship. However, this degree must be materially different from the chosen apprenticeship programme, meaning that the learner will be able to develop a significant range of new skills.
How long does an apprenticeship take?
This very much depends on the apprenticeship programme chosen, level of qualification and hours worked on the job, however in general an apprenticeship usually takes between 1-2 years to complete.
How much does it cost?
Apprenticeships are funded by the government or employer, which means there is no direct cost to the apprentice for undertaking this training.
The exact amount invested by the employer is dependent on the qualification level, sector and size of the organisation.
